London, United Kingdom

London was plainly and simply not on the gastronomic map when the brothers Albert and Michel Roux opened Le Gavroche a stone’s throw away from Sloane Square in 1967. The British people were about to be initiated to haute cuisine by these ambassadors to French gastronomy.

They were immediately successful and obtained their first Michelin star in 1974. In 1982 they were the first in the United Kingdom to boast three stars.

Many chefs have been apprentices at Le Gavroche and gone on to become great chefs in their own right: Gordon Ramsey, Gary Rhodes, Brian Maule, Steven Doherty, Marcus Wareing.

In 1985, Michel Roux left for the Thames river bank and started a new adventure with the Waterside Inn.

Michel Roux Junior, the son of Albert, took over from his father in 1991 and developed a form of classical cuisine that was renewed and inspired by the quality of the produce he was working with.

Equally passionate about wine, he enjoys researching possible pairings with dishes, which he reveals in his book Matching Food & Wine.

The warm welcome and refined service provided by head waiter, Silvano Girardin, also contribute to the magic of this place “so French” by its cuisine, yet so English in its dining room.

Saulieu, France

Bernard Loiseau was one of the greatest French chefs and restaurant owners. With three Michelin stars and a 19 marks out of 20 in the Gault-Millau, this ambassador for and staunch defender of French gastronomy was very popular in the ’80s and ’90s. His talent as a cook and his charisma gained him extensive media coverage.

His widow, Dominique Loiseau, maintains the spirit of Bernard Loiseau, who passed away in February 2003, and together with her loyal associate of more than 20 years, Patric Berton, continues his work.

Today, Patrick Berton keeps the menu up to date with new recipes in keeping with the Esprit Loiseau while Dominique Loiseau pours all her energy into the Relais Bernard Loiseau in her search for perfection.
